Patients are people who have provided samples for testing by labs. To access the Patients page, use the sidebar, go to Groups, then click on Patients.
Patients can be associated with many Accounts as well as many Providers.
While Patients can manage their own signatures within the Patient Portal, you can also do so from the Patient Details page.
If your lab is utilizing Dendi’s Patient Portal, then Patients can be assigned a username/password for logging in to the Patient Portal. However, in order for an already-registered Patient to be able to access their results via the Dendi Patient Portal, the “Patient can access Dendi Patient Portal” checkbox must be checked on the Patient’s record.
You can also control if specific Patients are emailed when results are ready by checking the box next to “Patient notified by email upon Order report (Patient Portal access required)”. By default, Patients who have registered themselves will have this checked. Only Patients with validated email addresses will receive email notifications.
Patients have the ability to self-register and set their own passwords using the Patient Registration form. Any other time a Patient is created with access to the Patient Portal, an email will be sent to the Patient with a link for them to set their password. You are able to initiate a reset of a Patient’s password for them in the LIS, which will email them the same link for setting a new password.
For more information on the Dendi Patient Portal, please refer to Dendi LIS Navigation Menus - Patient Portal (for Lab Staff).
To download a list of Patients & associated information, you can click on the “Export to CSV” button from the Groups → Patients page. The downloaded dataset will reflect any currently applied filters, and export files will be available from Analytics → Data Exports.

Dependent Patients
You can add dependents to a primary Patient (policyholder) from that Patient’s details page. Click the ‘+Dependent’ button, then fill in the necessary fields, similar to how you would create a new Patient.
Dependents are very similar to primary Patients, with the following key differences:
- Dependents cannot be changed into primary Patients
- Dependents cannot be linked to other dependents
- Dependents cannot be granted access to the Dendi Patient Portal. Instead, any results for a dependent will be shown to the primary Patient (policyholder)
Dependents will always inherit the following information from the primary Patient:
- Account(s)
- Provider(s)
- Primary Care Provider
- Insurance information
By default, dependents will also be created with the primary Patient’s address information, but you can specify a different address by unchecking the ‘Use policy holder’s address’ checkbox.
While inherited insurance & address information can be directly edited for the dependent at any point in the future, values for Account(s), Provider(s), and Primary Care Providers will always match those of the primary Patient.
Transferring Dependents from a Primary Patient to Another
Dependents can be transferred from one primary Patient to another. Once transferred, the dependent inherits certain information (Account, Provider, mailing address, insurance, etc.) from the new primary Patient. Additionally, the old primary Patient loses access to reported Orders for the transferred dependent, and the new primary Patient gains access.
Converting Primary Patients into Dependents
Primary Patients (policyholders) can be converted into a dependent. From the Patient Details page, click on Patient Options and select Convert to Dependent.
From the Primary Patient dropdown, you must choose an existing primary Patient to associate with the to-be-soon dependent.
Upon conversion, the new dependent inherits various fields from the policy holder, such as Account, Provider, mailing address, and insurance information.

Converting Dependents into Primary Patients
Similarly, dependents can be converted into Primary Patients (policy holders). From the Dependent Patient Details page, click on Dependent Options and select Convert to Primary Patient.
Upon conversion, the previously-dependent Patient will inherit certain fields from the previous policy holder (such as billing preference, associated Accounts, and associated Providers), but some fields (ex., email address, signature, and access to Dendi Patient Portal) will need to be set by lab staff.
Merging Patients & Dependents
Duplicate patient records are a common issue in many systems. While Dendi LIS does not explicitly prevent duplicate patient records from being created, the Merge Patient feature allows for the consolidation of several patient records into one.
Merge functionality exists for both primary Patients and dependents, but you can only merge a primary Patient with another primary Patient. Similarly, you can only merge one dependent with another.
During the merge, one selected patient will have their Accounts, Orders, and Test results assigned to the other patient. Any dependents attached to the patient being merged will also be associated with the new patient. All other information relating to the selected patient will be deleted and should be entered manually as desired.
The Merge Patient user interface automatically gives possible suggestions for patient duplicates based on patient name, date of birth, etc. A user can either select the suggested patient or manually select a patient from the search box.
Note: the patient merge process is permanent and not reversible.
Similar to how primary Patients can be merged, you are also able to merge two dependents together. To begin the process, navigate to the page of the dependent you wish to keep, click on the “Dependent Options” button, then select “Merge Dependents”. The rest of the workflow is the same as merging two primary Patients together.
Bulk Creating Patients
Patients can be bulk created by completing the patient bulk upload template:
The template must be filled out exactly according to the instructions are given on the page, and error messages will be shown on-screen for correction. The previously-uploaded documents will be available in the “Patient Bulk Create Documents” table.
Error messages for previous attempts can be downloaded in a CSV from the Patient Bulk Create Documents table.
